Rosstat presented data on vital statistics in February 2021

52 thousand marriages and 43.7 thousand divorces were registered during February 2021, 102.1 thousand babies were born and 172.7 thousand people died.

The number of COVID-19 related deaths decreased in February, compared to January 2021.

Rosstat distinguishes four categories of causes of death among persons diagnosed with COVID-19. The number of deaths decreased in each of the groups compared to January 2021. 

  • COVID-19 as the main cause of death. There were 14 171 such cases in February 2021 (a 37,7% decrease compared to January 2021);
  • COVID-19 is assumed to be the main cause of death, but more medical tests are needed to confirm the presence of the virus. There were 2 405 such cases in February 2021 (a 48,9% decrease compared to January 2021);
  • COVID-19 was a co-existing illness and influenced the development of other diseases, causing complications that hastened the patient's death. There were 1 954 such cases in February 2021 (a 16,4% decrease compared to January 2021);
  • COVID-19 was a co-existing illness, but did not affect death in any way. There were 5 839 such cases in February 2021 (a 27,8% decrease compared to January 2021).

Rosstat continues to update and clarify information by collecting and rechecking data for all Russian regions. In this regard, updated data on mortality caused by new coronavirus infection was published in January 2021.
