Rosstat published data on the population with income below the poverty line in 2022

At the end of 2022, there were 14.3 million people in Russia with incomes below the poverty line, which is 9.8% of the country's inhabitants. Compared to 2021, the share of the poor in the country decreased by 1.7 million people - from 16.0 million to 14.3 million people - or by 1.2 p.p. (from 11.0% in 2021 to 9.8% in 2022). Previously Rosstat published preliminary estimates of the population with incomes below the poverty line in 2022, which amounted to 15.3 million people or 10.5% of the country's population, respectively.

The refinement of the indicator regarding the operational assessment is primarily due to the analysis of the results of sample survey of household income and participation in social programs for 2022, which was carried out by Rosstat in January-February 2023 in all regions of the country (coverage - 60 thousand households, surveyed more than 100 thousand people who are direct recipients of income from work and social benefits).

Additional information was also received from administrative sources and banking statistics, data on the turnover of retail trade and public catering were clarified.

The results of the study of the incomes of Russians revealed the more accurate picture of the population distribution by the average per capita monetary income in 2022.

One of the most important conclusions of the study is that the dedicated targeted state support in 2022 affected the incomes of the poorest groups of the population, which led to a decrease in the differentiation of the population in terms of average per capita cash income (from 15.2 in 2021 to 13.8 in 2022).
