Sergey Egorenko Takes Part in the 17th Meeting of Heads of BRICS National Statistical Offices

Sergey Egorenko, Deputy Head of Rosstat, spoke at the 17th Meeting of the Heads of National Statistical Offices of BRICS Countries, held in Brazil as part of
the Triple International Forum on Governance of the Global South.

During the meeting, he outlined the key directions for the development of Russian statistics and emphasized the importance of international cooperation in the context of digital transformation.

"We live in an era of extraordinary changes. Digitalization, global crises, and social demands require corresponding transformation of statistical systems," stated Sergey Egorenko.

He noted that, in line with the "Better Data for Better Lives" concept, the aim of the official statistics is to provide timely and reliable statistics to enable policymakers to make evidence-based operational decisions, and ensure their monitoring.

He also reminded that in May 2024, the President of Russia Vladimir Putin set national development goals, including the digital transformation of public administration. By 2030, the country aims to achieve "digital maturity", including digitalization of government management through data-driven model, with the use of Big Data and AI technologies.

"Rosstat is part of this digital agenda, and statistics is an appropriate tool for achieving the goal set by the President," emphasized Deputy Head of Rosstat.

To achieve these goals, in 2024, the Russian government approved the Strategy for Development of National Statistical System and Rosstat until 2030. The key objectives include improving data quality, reducing timeline for statistical production as well as burden on businesses. The expected outcomes by 2030 are 95% of users satisfied with data quality, by 1.5 times reduced timing for production of traditional statistical indicators.

The ongoing efforts focus on the development of digital economy indicators. In Russia, more than 3,000 indicators, including disaggregated ones, are produced. The methodology of these indicators complies with the standards of International Telecommunication Union.

Sergey Egorenko expressed confidence that tasks lying ahead of Rosstat align with priorities of other BRICS countries. The annual meeting of the leaders of BRICS statistical offices has become a traditional platform for discussing challenges, sharing best practices, and developing joint solutions in statistics.

Following the meeting, the initiatives to organize the Workshop on production of indicators of digital development, digital economy, digital governance, and digital inclusion were supported. The proposal to launch Observatory on National Experiences in Economic Development, Poverty Reduction, and Climate Change Mitigation was also considered.

Heads of delegations acknowledged the importance of establishing BRICS International Training Center and BRICS Statistical Journal, and also agreed on further work to be carried out within the framework of relevant working groups.
