On June 3, 2010, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly adopted resolution 64/267 declaring October 20 as the World Statistics Day. Statistical offices around the world celebrate World Statistics Day every five years. This day is intended to highlight the importance of statistics for informed decision-making in all areas of society and economy.
“Statistics today is an international language of communication, understandable and close for both experts and common users. Through the hard work and talent of statisticians, numbers are no longer to be pointless figures and take on meaning, tell stories, and help us make informed decisions,” said the Head of Rosstat Sergey Galkin.
Rosstat closely cooperates with international organizations, such as UN, BRICS, CIS Statistical Committee, Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).
“In times of crisis, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, statistical systems proved their resilience, delivering the data that guided life-saving decisions as well as social and economic recovery. As we confront increasingly inter-connected global challenges – from climate change to rising inequalities – timely, accurate, disaggregated, and independent data has never been more essential,” emphasized the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in his message for World Statistics Day.
The Russian Federation is a permanent member of the UN Statistical Commission, the principal decision-making body in international statistics. The commission addresses statistical standards development, as well as the creation and implementation of concepts and methods at the national and international levels, for example, the System of National Accounts 2025 (SNA 2025) recently adopted by the UN. Along with other countries, Russia is currently preparing to develop approaches to implement the standard at the national level.
One of the key international trends is digitalization and data transparency. Under the Russian Chairmanship in BRICS in 2024, Rosstat launched the online BI platform, that provides open and convenient access to statistics from BRICS member countries.
Together with CIS countries, Rosstat is developing common approaches to implementation of Big Data and AI in statistical production, strengthening regional cooperation and increasing the efficiency of statistical services.
"We share experiences and discuss joint initiatives within the project 'Development of CIS Statistics’. Such collaboration enables us to effectively respond to modern challenges and strengthen our partnership. I am confident that the results of our cooperation will form the basis for new projects and achievements," noted Konstantin Laykam, Chairman of the CIS Statistical Committee.
Rosstat pays special attention on developing of bilateral cooperation with NSOs such as the National Bureau of Statistics of China, the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia, and many others. Our offices exchange practical experience in modernizing statistical systems and effective use of Big and administrative data. Такая
Andrey Klepach, Chairman of the Public Council of Rosstat, also emphasized the importance of maintaining global contact:
"Rosstat is consistently implementing its Strategy for the development of national statistics, strengthening professional ties with international partners and implementing innovative technological solutions that make Russian statistics even more reliable and effective.
Today, Rosstat congratulates everyone who works in statistics on their professional day!
Happy World Statistics Day!
